pfranknd | 30 August, 2010 12:29

There are several potential health or nutritional benefits possible from some species of lactic acid bacteria.

Among these are:

  1. Improved nutritional value of food
  2. Control of intestinal infections
  3. Improved digestion of lactose
  4. Control of some types of cancer
  5. Control of serum cholesterol levels
  6. Improved immune system function
  7. Improved health of the digestive tract particularly in conditions like ulcers, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease
  8. Moderation of the immune system and alleviation of allergies
Some potential benefits may result from growth and action of the bacteria during the manufacture of cultured foods and some from growth and action of certain species of the lactic acid bacteria in the intestinal tract following ingestion of foods containing them.

Long Distance Runners Have More Coronary Plaque?

pfranknd | 15 August, 2010 14:13

A group of elite long-distance runners had less body fat, better lipid profiles, and better heart rates than people being tested for cardiac disease, but, paradoxically, the runners had more calcified plaque in their heart arteries, according to a new study.

Note however that:
  • This is a small study that needs further investigation and should not be used as the basis for reduction of exercise, which typically improves heart health.
  • This study was published as an abstract and presented at a conference. These data and conclusions should be considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.
